Painful

about 2 weeks ago i visited a doctor for what i thought was an ear ache. The pain was diagnosed as TMJ...I have had dull pain but i will receive spurts of excruciating pain..The pain comes in waves and it is so bad it becomes crippling. After about 1 hour the pain does go away with the normal dull pain. I have been given low dose steroid(predosone) only to have the extreme pain come back after i was done with the dose. The sharp pain goes down my lower jaw,up to the top of my head. I was wondering if anyone has experienced this. I believe i do have TMJ but i am confused as the symptoms do not totally match what i am experiencing
